Title: Cancer stem cells and plant bioactive compounds

Abstract

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide and estimated to reach 24.8 million case in 2040 which is tend to increase by 40% comparing to 2020. The main reason of cancer drug resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy is the cancer stem cell. If we completely eliminate the cancer stem cells, cancer cells are unable to grow up therefore patient become able to die with their biological cause of death. We used a related studies and articles from the database and search engine including PubMed, PubMed Central, Google Scholar. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) constitute the smaller portion of the cancer cell population and it described as the cancer growth cell that can form the tumor. Same as a stem cells, the CSCs are remarkable with their cellular regeneration and cellular differentiation. Accurate and appropriate regulation of stem cell is important in normal biological process of the cell. It had been confirmed that several signaling pathways (NF-kB, Nrf2, PI3K, STAT, Wnt, Hedgehog, Notch etc.) play important role in cell normal function. Most of these important signaling pathways for cellular function are got lost during cancer formation. Some plant bioactive compounds are found to have a prevent properties from cancer, eradicating cancer stem cells by regulating cancer stem cell signaling pathways, prohibiting angiogenesis and also have a high capability of destroying cancer cell which had been proved in vivo and in vitro studies. Treating cancer stem cells with plant based bioactive compound can become the sustainable strategy to treat cancer. We are studying a cancer stem cells general mechanism and possibility to cancer treatment with plant based bioactive compound. We will explore the possibility of using plant bioactive compounds that can affect cancer stem cells in combination with current cancer treatment and general mechanisms of cancer stem cells.
