Presentation Title:

Monitoring Aflatoxins in Pistachio and Pistachio Products in Dubai 2016 to 2020

Abstract

The main aim of the present study was to examine aflatoxin (AF) contamination in imported pistachio and products containing pistachio (n=1929) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during 2016-2020. AF in pistachio and pistachio products were measured by using HPLC system. The evaluation of AF contamination was based on maximum limits (MLs) defined by CODEX regulations for pistachio. Four types of aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2 were tested in the study and about 89.84% of the samples were within an acceptable range (below the ML or no detectable traces) while 10.16% exceeded the MLs. Pistachio nuts and pistachio spread and paste were common products identified that exceeded MLs. pistachio ice cream, pistachio butter, cream, pistachio milk pistachio syrup and pistachio pasta were most frequently found to be aflatoxin-free. . The results underline the need for continuous monitoring of aflatoxins in pistachio imported into the UAE.
