Federal University of Santa Catarina, BrazilTitle: Advanced practice nurses in oncology: evidences for the best care and core competencies for the training
Abstract
The advanced practice nurse is
known for having acquired specialized knowledge, complex decision-making skills
and clinical competencies for an expanded practice, whose characteristics are
adapted according to the scenario of each country and the various existing
fields of practice. Objectives: to present evidence of the training of advanced
practice nurses through clinical performance and nursing care of patients with
cancer; and to present the core competencies of advanced practice nurses in
oncology. These results come from my doctoral research, developed at the
Federal University of Santa Catarina. The systematic review showed improvement
in the pain control or other symptoms related to the disease and/or treatment,
satisfaction and increased quality of life of patients with cancer when
assisted by an advanced practice nurse. In addition, a document collection and
analysis were carried out based on specific documents available for public
consultation related to educational or health institutions, councils,
societies, associations and/or advanced practice nursing organizations and the
area of oncology nursing. These documentary data were the basis for the
development of the next stages of the research. In the Delphi technique, 125
core competencies of clinical nurses specializing in oncology were validated. It
is noteworthy that aspects related to leadership, interprofessional
collaboration, specialized clinical judgment, critical thinking, evidence-based
practice, care management, ethics and professional commitment, communication,
education/teaching, research and professional autonomy reflect the nature of advanced
practice nurses and steer towards an expanded, effective, and excellent
professional practice. Advanced practice training proposes the development of
core competencies for working with cancer patients and their families,
throughout the continuum of care, collaborating with/influencing clinical
practice and health systems, together with the interprofessional team.
